Play and Socialization in Montaigne: Horsemanship, Carnival, Conversation
(2019) Pinto, Arielle; Prettyman, Adrienne; Sedley, David Louis, 1968-
In this thesis, I explore the relationship between play and socialization in Michel de Montaigne’s work. I argue that for Montaigne, certain forms of play can help socialize an individual into courtly society, due to the fact that in a game, there is an interplay of rules and improvisation. I this relationship in three different contexts: horsemanship, carnival and conversation. I use “rules” to mean either written rules or implicit societal norms. I use the term “improvisation” to mean the spontaneity and initiative.
