Abstract
Affordable Braille actuators were designed, STL printed and tested for functionality, for the purpose of creating full page refreshable Braille display and stand-alone Braille devices such as calculators. Mechanical actuators with a cam-and-follower assembly were found to be suitable for this project; and a non-scientific calculator was designed to implement these actuators. The calculator built for this project is controlled by an Arduino board, has a five character display-grid, 19 input buttons and a linear positioning system to traverse solenoids through the cam-and-follower arrays for activating the Braille pins.
