Abstract
In this thesis, I consider the question of whether an ASL instructor should use English as!
a teaching tool. I consider a few studies done on the effect of English use on the acquisition of
vocabulary, and various teaching techniques that involve the use of English to teach grammar. I
also bring in perspectives from spoken language research, contextualize the issue by discussing
the history of the deaf community, and provide the perspective of an ASL instructor currently
teaching students. This allows me to examine the issue more fully by considering both the
acquisition of the language itself and the cultural impact of language teaching methods.
