Abstract
The growing rate of violence committed with handguns in the United States should be a matter of great concern. This paper examines this phenomenon of gun-related violence. Gun control is one way to attempt to solve the problem, and restrictive gun measures should be adopted. Gun control alone cannot solve the problem, but it is a step in the right direction. Topics covered in this paper include the Second Amendment's "right to bear arms", guns and suicide, and juvenile gun violence. In addition, a sample of studies assessing the affect of gun control on firearms violence are presented, as well as an original regression analysis pertaining to the affect of waiting periods on violent crime. While the empirical evidence regarding the effect of gun control on firearms violence has been inconclusive thus far, this country should not wait for conclusive evidence before implementing restrictive measures. The only way to judge whether such measures will be effective on a national level is to try them and see. There is little to lose and many lives to be gained.
