Abstract
The term preventive diplomacy originated in a Cold War context by UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold in 1960. Preventive diplomacy was used to protect nations from superpower threat in "power vacuums." In the post- Cold War world, the US and the UN use "preventive diplomacy" interchangeably with preventive action. The definition has broadened to incorporate post-Cold War conflict. Preventive diplomacy produces positive results and encourages policymakers to formulate creative responses. The US should practice preventive diplomacy in Zaire and Nigeria to promote world peace and stability and to prevent violent crises.
