Abstract
This paper examines different approaches to evaluating the Chinese Yuan’s real exchange rate, with the goal of understanding the current debate on whether or not the Yuan is undervalued. The main approaches applied in past studies are introduced. The results obtained by using different approaches and different data sources are compared. Finally, a brief critique on the various approaches is presented. Comparisons show that the difficulty involved in estimating the Yuan’s exchange rate is substantial due to unavoidable subjective assumptions inherent in the various models used.
