María Victoria Paez is an art historian and curator in Quito, Ecuador who specializes in art restoration and conservation. In this interview with Richard Oulahan she discusses the tourism industry and the importance of conserving cultural heritage sites and artifacts from colonial and pre-hispanic eras. She reflects on the recent visit from Pope Francis, as well as the socioeconomic and environmental effects of the country’s petroleum economy.
