Abstract
Sex differences have emerged in mice in non-opioid stress induced analgesia paradigms. Male analgesia has been attenuated by NMDA antagonists while females were not affected by this drug. We proposed that these findings can be found cross-species in rats following an injection of NMDA intracranially into the periaqueductal gray. This hypothesis was tested with a microinjection paradigm resulting in stimulating analgesia in male but not female subjects. Rats were subjected to noxious stimuli after receiving injections of both saline and NMDA conditions. Morphine was injected as a third trial as a preliminary verification. Although significant results were not reached, the data shows trends towards supporting the hypothesis.
