- ItemState and Religion: Austrian Quaker Nazi Identity in World War II(2012) Glaser, Sarah A.; McGuire, Anne MarieThe interaction between Quakerism and Nazism has been heavily studied in regards to the aid work Quakers provided, but the topic of the Quakers who sided with the Nazis is rarely explored. This thesis examines how it would be possible for a small group of Quakers in the Vienna Meeting to align themselves politically with the Nazi government while still maintaining their Quaker identities. Specifically the case of Rudolph Boeck, the Vienna representative to the German Yearly Meeting and a member of the Nazi government, illustrates this point most clearly. The non-dogmatic ideas behind Quakerism and the unique cultural circumstances of post-World War I Austria made these two ideologies compatible for the Vienna Quakers of the time.
