My
thesis
studies
how
the
figure
of
Achilles
in
Homer’s
Iliad
informs
and
shapes
the
character
of
Batman
in
Christopher
Nolan’s
The
Dark
Knight
Trilogy.
I
closely
examine
the
significant
effects
that
Achilles
and
Batman’s
interpersonal
relationships
have
on
their
emotional
complexities.
In
doing
so,
I
argue
that
these
relationships
to
other
ordinary
characters
shape
their
heroic
journeys.
In
particular,
I
closely
analyze
the
role
that
anger
and
rage
play
and
the
ways
in
which
Batman’s
character
deviates
from
and
follows
the
model
set
before
by
Achilles.
In
doing
this,
I
hope
to
illustrate
how
much
of
an
both
heroes
increase
our
understanding
of
heroism
and
how
antiquity
remains
culturally
relevant.
