By first looking back to Kant's influence on Schiller, the paper then takes a more profound look at Schiller's agreements with and departures from Kant, as well as his ideas on freedom and play. The final portion of the paper considers aesthetic education (and its moral goals) as it might be put into practice, using the educational theory of Rudolf Steiner and the development of his Waldorf School as its central focus.

- ItemEmbodiment and Embeddedness in Philosophies of Ecology: Deep Ecology, Confucian Ecology, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology(2002) Schlottmann, Chris; Gangadean, Ashok K., 1941-; Kosman, Louis AryehThe present ecological crisis might have some roots in its philosophical forbears. This senior essay explores three ecological philosophies and their implications: Deep Ecology, a contemporary ecocentric movement; Confucian ecology, which posits an "ethical anthropocentrism" ; and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's late phenomenology, which immerses humankind's thought and perception wholly within the visible-invisible world. All three philosophies raise serious questions regarding the projects of epistemology and ontology, together with problematizing rationality and objectivity. Sensuousness takes on epistemological primacy, and the prospect of a reoriented and unified system becomes feasible. For a contextual philosophical endeavor to begin, it must include the implications of immersion and embeddedness in the natural world.
- ItemFrom mourning to melancholia : voicing authorship in its loss(2002) Block, Daniel R.; Benston, Kimberly W.; Wright, Kathleen, 1944-; Kosman, Louis AryehHow do writers mourn for their unconscious alienation from the authorial norm? Sigmund Freud's "Mourning and Melancholia," and its more recent applications to psychoanalytic trauma theory, illuminates the latency of the writer's melancholia, whose alienation is belatedly experienced out of time. For just this reason, Freud prescribes against melancholia as grief's privative disorder to which mourning is a recuperative process. Contra Freud, the essay works to recover the writer's melancholia from Freud's reading of its lack as unredeemably debilitating. An initial inquiry into why writers suffer melancholic loss will proceed to ask how melancholia addresses its authorial other within the writerly self. How does authorship fashion its mode of self-relation vis-a-vis loss? The latter project focuses itself through an analysis of elegiac poetry and Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" as the paradigmatic mode of relation in and through which writers confront their authorial self-abstention. Here, Gray's poem grounds the study of the call and response between self and absent other, which defines the rhetoric of prosopopeia. In particular, prosopopeia's dialogic imperative to tell and be heard envisions how melancholia might rehabilitate the writer's unconscious loss.
- ItemGenus and differentia : reconciling unity in definition(2004) Vogler, Brian; Kosman, Louis AryehAristotle argues in the Metaphysics that substances are essentially one, yet their definitions consist of two terms: a genus and a differentia. In this essay, I develop two theories that solve the problem of unity within genus-differentia definitions. I argue first that the genus on an analogical theory would be identical to the differentia. In this way, the definition is one term because the genus is resolved into the differentia. I then give a second theory on which the genus is univocal. On this theory, the genus is understood as a potentiality on which differentiae act to determine the genus as a species, i.e. as the definition of a thing. In this way, the genus and differentia are the species just as matter and form are primary substances.
